General Electric Building Plane Parts With 3D Printing

General Electric, on the hunt for ways to build more than 85,000 fuel nozzles for its new Leap jet engines, is making a big investment in 3D printing. Usually the nozzles are assembled from 20 different parts. Also known as additive manufacturing, 3D printing can create the units in one metal piece, through a successive layering of materials. The process is more efficient and can be used to create designs that can’t be made using traditional techniques, GE says. The finished product is stronger and lighter than those made on the assembly line and can withstand the extreme temperatures (up to 2,400F) inside an engine. There’s just one problem: Today’s industrial 3D printers don’t have enough capacity to handle GE’s production needs, which require faster, higher-quality output at a lower cost.
Courtesy GE AviationEach Leap engine will contain 19 metal 3D-printed fuel nozzles. The part is lighter and more durable than traditional parts

“With today’s technology, it would take too many machines,” as many as 60 to 70, to efficiently make the nozzles, says Greg Morris, business development leader for additive manufacturing at GE Aviation. Morris joined the aerospace company last year, as part of GE’s acquisition of his 3D company, Morris Technologies. “We can start ramping up with the current generation of technology, but within two to three years we’re going to have to be onto the next generation to meet our cost targets,” he says. So GE is waiting for development of new printers with three to four times the capacity.

As part of a $3.5 billion investment in its aerospace supply chain, GE says it will spend tens of millions of dollars to invest in new technology and, over the next five years, triple the size of its 70-person 3D-printing staff and expand its factory floor fourfold. (The 85,000 nozzles are for engine orders that will enter full production in late 2015.)

The company’s embrace of 3D printing throws the weight of the world’s largest jet-engine maker behind a process invented in the 1980s to fabricate scale models. As the technology has advanced, 3D printing has evolved. Today, Boeing uses the process to make plastic air-conditioning ducts for its 787 Dreamliner jet, and Nike has a football cleat made on 3D printers. “[GE’s] investment changes everything, and it’s also unprecedented,” says Terry Wohlers, president of 3D printing consulting company Wohlers Associates. The company’s annual report tracking 3D technology estimates that the industry is poised to almost triple, to about $6 billion in sales, by 2017.

Amazon To Start Making Deliveries Using Drones

In the not-too-distant future, Amazon deliveries could come by air directly to your doorstep.

The online mega-retailer unveiled plans on Sunday for a new delivery service called Prime Air, which uses unmanned aerial vehicles -- or drones -- that look like toy helicopters.
The "octocopters" aren't ready to take flight yet. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said in an interview that the drones would be ready to take flight in four to five years. But an Amazon spokesperson pointed to an updated post on the company's website promising aerial deliveries as soon as governing rules change.
The type of flights Bezos proposed are currently not allowed. Unlike some other drones currently used, these would be autonomous -- they would fly without a pilot.

Fortune Names Elon Musk The Top Businessperson of 2013

Fortune Magazine has named Musk the top businessperson of 2013 based on the revenues and stock price gains from three companies he founded — Tesla, SpaceX and SolarCity — and the "cultural impact" he has had through these and other ventures, including the much-discussed Hyperloop concept.

"The co-founder of PayPal has gone on to disrupt aeronautics with Space Exploration Technologies, known as SpaceX; shake up the auto business with Tesla Motors; and retool the energy sector with SolarCity," Fortune notes in its writeup of Musk. "But it is his audacity and tenacity that make him Fortune's Businessperson of the Year."
This accomplishment comes at a tenuous time for Musk as one of those companies, Tesla, is struggling to beat back concerns following reports that several of its cars have caught fire. Tesla's stock had approached nearly $200 a share, a more than sixfold increase for the year, but has since dropped back down to the low $120 range.
Musk isn't the only tech exec to rank high on Fortune's list. The CEOs of Netflix, Amazon and Google all cracked the top 10. Angela Ahrendts, the current CEO of Burberry and soon-to-be retail exec at Apple, ranked fourth on the list as well.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Rumored to Have 64-bit CPU, Aluminum Body – Details

One of the latest rumors about the next flagship smartphone from Samsung, i.e. the Galaxy S5 says that it would be coming with the 14 nm Exynos 6 64-bit CPU, and with this, it could be the first Android smartphone to have a 64-bit CPU? iPhone 5S from Apple has the 64-bit A7 chipset and Samsung won’t be waiting for long before they come out with the upgraded CPU.
The architecture would remain the same, with Samsung including the Octa-core architecture of the Exynos chipset but it expected that the new one would have the capability to run all the cores at once. The production of these chipsets is expected to be by the end of this year, and Samsung would be the first to use the Exynos 6 chipset in the Galaxy S5.
it now seems that Samsung is thinking to showcase this smartphone as early as in CES 2014 or in MWC 2014 which is the upcoming tech shows scheduled in January and February 2014.  Flexible Screen for Galaxy S5 still seems skeptical as there are still no news about mass production.

How to share your PC or Desktop Internet with your HTC inspire 4G or Desire HD via USB

Believe it or not, there are scenarios where one might want to share an internet connection with one's mobile device. In my case I needed this solution because I didn't have access to the Wi-Fi at work and didn't have any active subscriptions and I needed to be online. So I had to search out a way to use my internet enabled (via Ethernet ) work desktop  to share connection with my phone.
The process is the opposite of the intrinsically provided Tethering feature of android phones and it is known as reverse tethering.
To share your PC internet with your HTC Android via USB is not too difficult but you are gonna need a few things to get started.
1. Your phone must be rooted. There are of course  many resources online to help you with this. A simple Google search should suffice.
2. Your PC or laptop must be connected to the internet. Obviously!
3. Your phones drivers must be installed on the PC you are connected to via USB
Lets get started.
1. Ensure you have an internet connection on your PC
2. Connect your HTC via USB to the PC and enable USB debugging
3. Download Android Reverse Tethering and run it by clicking on Android Tool.exe
4. Go to  this page to download and follow the instructions to get Android Reverse Tethering.  (This software is only available for windows )
Reverse Tethering should be able to recognise your device if its drivers are installed. And then you are good to go.
5. Obtaining your phone's drivers for your PC might be an issue. So to fix this you will need to install PdaNet+.
PdaNet+ will search out and install your phone's drivers to your PC and install itself on your phone. Locate PdaNet+ via google from your PC and install it. ( You might need to skip this step if Reverse tether has already detected your phone. )
6. Select your device from the drop down list on Reverse Tethering and click connect.
Follow the prompts on your phone screen and grant Super User access
7. Hurray, you are good to go. Happy browsing!!!

Facebook Changes Like Button

Pop quiz: What buttons are seen more than 22 billion times every day, embedded on 7.5 million websites?
Answer: the Facebook Like and Share buttons, according to new numbers released by the social network.

And now these most widespread of online icons are both getting their first ever redesign.
The biggest difference you'll notice straight away: the thumb is gone from the Like button. Instead, it will appear in the dialogue box above the button that shows you how many Likes your post or page has.
The new button features the Facebook "f" logo instead. It is white on blue, rather than blue on white, as is the new share button. The Share button will replace Facebook's Send button — deemed too confusing.

Redesigned Like

The reason for the redesign? The new version is optimized for high-resolution screens, according to Peter Yang, a product manager at Facebook, in the comments section of the Facebook blog post announcing the change.
Users should start to see the change on those 7.5 million websites as it rolls out over the coming weeks.

Bill Gates Is Trying To Convince Real Madrid To Rename Its Stadium 'Microsoft Bernabéu'

According to the Spanish newspaper El Confidencial, soccer giant Real Madrid is in talks with Bill Gates about a deal to grant Microsoft naming rights to its storied stadium, the Bernabéu.
Opened in 1947, the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu is named after the man who served as Real Madrid president for 35 years and helped transform the club into one of the dominant players in the world's most popular sport. Since its inception, the Bernabéu has seen Real win 30 Spanish league championships and nine European titles.
Though doing so might anger longtime fans, selling naming rights to the Bernabéu would help Real Madrid fund a proposed renovation of the stadium that is expected to cost more than $400 million. The club said in May that if it did sell naming rights, it would do so in a way that kept Santiago Bernaéu's name beside that of a sponsor.
As it stands, Microsoft and Real Madrid already have a good working relationship, having collaborated recently on projects to bring software and athletic programs to impoverished youth in Latin America. For Microsoft, the move would burnish the company's image as a pioneer and leader in the tech field and allow it to profit from the Real Madrid brand, which Forbes has ranked the most valuable in all of sports. The company already has a partial sponsorship of the home stadium of Seattle Sounders, a soccer team that plays on "the XBox Pitch at CenturyLink Field."
Though selling naming rights to stadiums came into fashion in the U.S. in the mid-90s with Colorado's Coors Field and Chicago's United Center, the trend was slow to being taken up in European soccer. Though all major soccer teams have a sponsor on their uniforms, no team currently in La Liga, Spain's top soccer league, plays in a stadium named in part for a company.

Twitter’s #Music App Could Be On The Way Out, Says New Report

Twitter’s #Music app, which offered social music discovery culled from activity on the 140-character sharing service, is reportedly nearing the end of its brief life, according to a new report from AllThingsD. Twitter is “strongly considering” shuttering the mobile app, after its download and usage numbers have dropped precipitously following a respectable launch.

From its very beginnings, Twitter #Music was something of an ugly duckling at the company, the report suggests, having been spearheaded by now-COO of Jelly just before his abrupt departure. It was essentially developed (and operates) on its own, according to ATD, and never integrated into Twitter’s core product to the extent that it would have any real impact on Twitter’s material business.

Back when Twitter #Music launched, I took it for a spin and explained my distaste for the product in some detail. Before today, I hadn’t really opened it that much since, but it honestly seems like I haven’t been missing much. Twitter #Music still relies heavily on you using the social network to follow musicians you care about to work really well, or to follow people whose musical tastes you find interesting. Neither of those things are true about my Twitter usage, and I suspect it’s the same for a wide swath of the network’s members.
It’s true that some of the features work reasonably well in terms of offering up some interesting new music, but none so well as similar services from competing apps. Rdio has done a lot lately to step up its personalized radio offerings, for instance, and they were better than Twitter #Music’s before that. Plus, there’s iTunes Radio now, which is very strong, very free competitor with no stipulations required to get full track streaming.
The real problem is still that what’s unique about Twitter #Music isn’t valuable enough to outweigh the benefits of the other apps playing in the same sandbox. And while music discovery is an area with plenty of legs, it’s also one that people likely won’t find themselves looking around for multiple solutions for. Grab Songza, get some Rdio going, and you’re pretty much set.
As AllThingsD points out, even Twitter seems to realize this: It has partnered with both iTunes Radio and Rdio on providing content suggestions over the past year. There’s opportunity for Twitter in music – just not likely in #Music.
